Begging Dog is the indie-punk project of Los Angeles–based artist Jeff Kleinman (Choir Boy), channeling a raw, homespun sound with nods to garage punk and plain-spoken lyricism. DEMO 1 packs 26 minutes of rolling bass and synth lines, charismatic riffs, and motorik drum beats. Kleinman writes in sharp, direct free verse, sketching lived-in scenes and characters—a pushy union rep, a mailman with a steady federal job, a compulsive gambler, a beloved neighborhood fixture—while ex-loves haunt several tracks. He taps into a shared loneliness—with a particular Los Angeles tint—delivered with no-frills nuance and vulnerability. The title track’s line “no one loves a begging dog” (borrowed from a friend) captures the record’s perspective: the world can make you feel like you’re pleading for affection and security, yet there’s beauty in solitude and the hum of everyday life. The synth-laced Laughing Boy contemplates meaning amid high rent, jasmine on the air, and a jarring police presence, while Common Place pairs urgent drum machines and distortion with snapshots from downtown 7‑Eleven epiphanies to memories of communal living in Salt Lake City—arriving at a new mantra: “It’s over.” For fans of honest, hook-driven indie punk, DEMO 1 is a concise, evocative statement from Begging Dog on Dais Records. Tracklist: Begging Dog; Cave In On Me; Money Tree; The Eel; Laughing Boy; Clamshell Tune; Continuing Education; Tell Me That You Love Me; Common Place; Here For A Good Time.
