It was against this backdrop that the four members of La Luz - singer \/ guitarist Shana Cleveland, drummer Marian Li Pino, keyboardist Alice Sandahl, and bassist Lena Simon - conceived of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eFloating Features,\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e the band’s third studio album. For this, their most ambitious release yet, La Luz consulted landscapes both physical and psychological. References to dreams abound on \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eFloating Features\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eLoose Teeth\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e catalyzes nightmare fuel into a propulsive, intentionally-disorienting collision of honeyed harmonies and Takeshi Terauchi-esque jetstreams of distorted surf guitar. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eMean Dream\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e unsurprisingly mines dream-state imagery, and the lyrics and melody for \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eWalking Into the Sun\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e actually came to Cleveland during a particularly-vivid night of deep sleep. Looming over the album’s coterie of surreal figures (gargantuan cicadas, a monstrous \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eCreature\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, The Sun King, aliens, the titular \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eLonely Dozer\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e) is the magnificent \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eGreed Machine\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, a skulking, insatiable engine of consumption - Nathanael West’s “business of dreams” fearsomely manifested.
