Olan Monk returns with Songs For Nothing, a deeply felt second album for AD 93 shaped by the west coast of Ireland. Rooted in sean-nós tradition and the confessional spirit of Sinéad O’Connor, Monk reimagines heritage through collaged pop, machinic rock, shoegaze textures, slow airs, and traces of witch house, cloud rap, and Irish traditional music. Dedicated to Conamara and all who have called it home, the record channels Atlantic weather and granite pulse into songs that feel both intimate and elemental.
A departure from earlier electronic work, these arrangements foreground voice, guitar, and tin whistle, with contributions from Maria Somerville (feature on “Down 3” and a duet on “Fate (Reprise)”), Peadar Tom Mercier (accordion on “Amhrán Mhaínse”), and fellow Irish experimentalists Michael Speers, Dylan Kerr, Aindriú De Buitléir, Risteárd O’hAodha, and Róisín Berkeley. Songs For Nothing honors song traditions while carving out new space—music from the heart, for the in‑between places.
